Sustainability claims on clothing can be vague. Independent certifications give you something specific to check before you buy.
What OEKO-TEX labels cover
OEKO-TEX runs several labels that each verify different things. STANDARD 100 shows an item has passed safety testing for more than a thousand harmful substances. MADE IN GREEN goes further, indicating the item was produced more sustainably in socially responsible workplaces, is traceable, and has been tested for harmful substances.
Organic cotton
The OEKO-TEX Organic Cotton label verifies a product from the farm onwards. It confirms no genetically modified organisms were used and that the item has been tested for pesticides and other harmful substances.
How to use this
Remember that each label describes a different thing: a substance-safety label is not the same as an organic or social-responsibility claim. Read what a certification covers before treating it as proof of a wholly sustainable garment.
