Switzerland has a long watchmaking tradition, and several brands sit outside the very top end of the market. Here are five worth knowing, with facts drawn from reference sources. Prices vary by model, so check the current price before you buy.

Tissot

Founded in 1853 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Émile. It is part of The Swatch Group.

Certina

Founded in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen, Switzerland, and also part of The Swatch Group.

Swatch

The first twelve Swatch models were launched on 1 March 1983 in Zürich. The brand was founded by Ernst Thomke, Elmar Mock and Jacques Müller and built around a fashionable, colourful line.

Mondaine

Founded in 1951 by Erwin Bernheim in Pfäffikon. It has held the licence for the Swiss Federal Railways station clock design on its watches since 1986.

Victorinox

Best known for the Swiss Army Knife, the company was founded in 1884 by Karl Elsener in Ibach, Canton Schwyz, and also makes Swiss-made watches.

How to choose

Decide how you will wear it, then check the movement type, case size, strap and warranty. Buy from an authorised seller and keep the paperwork.
