Denmark is best known in fashion for its organised, forward-looking approach, most visible in its flagship event, Copenhagen Fashion Week.
From trade fairs to fashion week
The first Copenhagen Fashion Week took place in 2006, after two Danish trade fairs, Dansk Modeuge and Dansk Herremodeuge, were merged. Those fairs themselves date back to the 1950s. The event is run by the Danish Fashion Institute, a non-profit trade group founded in 2005 and based in Copenhagen, and it is held twice a year.
A focus on sustainability
Copenhagen has become known for setting standards. Brands showing on the official schedule must demonstrate that at least half of their collection uses certified, preferred, up-cycled or recycled materials, and they must commit to due diligence across their supply chain. The Danish Fashion Institute has said the event now includes more than 40 shows and thousands of exhibiting brands.
Marking twenty years
In August 2026, Vogue Scandinavia described Copenhagen Fashion Week as the most significant twice-yearly fashion event in the region as it celebrated its twentieth anniversary.
