In Libya, everyday clothing is mostly modernised, international fashion, while traditional dress is mainly kept for special occasions.
Men’s traditional dress
Men wear a long white shirt (jalabiya or qamis) with long trousers (sirwal), topped with a sadriya vest knitted with black silk. Headwear is a red or black shashiyah; men in Tripolitania prefer black. A large jarid cloak may be wrapped toga-style and tied at the right shoulder. The outfit is worn for Friday prayers, Eid and weddings.
Women’s traditional dress
Women’s outfits include a blouse with baggy sleeves embroidered in beads and silver or gold thread, baggy silk trousers, and brightly coloured cloths worn toga-like and fastened with silver brooches. Rural women use heavy woven, rug-like cloths because of the climate. Jewellery is large, with necklaces reaching the knees and bracelets four to six inches wide.
A wedding tradition
The full outfit is worn only for special occasions. Traditionally the groom gives the outfit and gold to the bride, who wears it the day after the wedding.
