Many people search for oils or products that help them tan faster. The NHS takes a different line: its sun-safety guidance says there is no safe or healthy way to get a tan, and that a tan does not protect skin from the sun’s harmful effects. The page does not discuss tanning oils specifically.
Choose proper sun protection
The NHS advises a sunscreen labelled with at least SPF 30 for UVB protection and at least 4-star UVA protection. It also says sunscreen should not be your only defence against the sun.
Avoid sunbeds
The NHS, citing Cancer Research UK, advises against sunbeds and sunlamps. It notes that they can be more dangerous than natural sunlight because of their concentrated UV source, and lists skin cancer, premature ageing, sunburn and eye irritation among the risks. If you like a bronzed look, a gradual self-tan is a way to get colour without added UV exposure.
