Buying well is often the most practical form of responsible shopping. These habits apply to any price level.
Buy fewer, better pieces
Work out cost per wear by dividing the price by the number of times you expect to wear it. A 400 pound coat worn 100 times costs 4 pounds per wear.
Choose pieces you can repair
Good construction, replaceable buttons and hems that can be let down make a garment easier to keep. A local tailor or cobbler can extend the life of many items.
Look after what you own
Follow care labels, store leather away from heat and strong light, and keep knitwear folded.
Treat green claims with care
Regulators take misleading environmental claims seriously. The UK Competition and Markets Authority published its Green Claims Code in September 2021, and the Norwegian Consumer Agency found H&M’s “Conscious” claims misleading. Look for specific, evidenced statements rather than general words like “eco” or “conscious”.
