Somali traditional dress is graceful and layered, with distinct garments for everyday life, weddings and Eid.
Women’s dress
Women wear the guntiino for everyday wear, a long cloth tied over the shoulder and draped around the waist, traditionally plain white with decorative borders and now often made of alindi. For weddings and Eid, the dirac is a long, light, sheer voile dress, often sparkly and colourful, worn over a silk underskirt called a gorgorad. A garbasaar shawl may be worn over the upper body, and married women typically wear a shash headscarf.
Men’s dress
Men traditionally wear the macawis, a sarong-like garment around the waist, with a cloth wrapped over the upper body, plus a turban or the embroidered koofiyad cap. The long white thawb is common, and the richly embroidered jubbad robe is traditional attire for upper-class men.
Jewellery and henna
Women traditionally wear gold and silver bangles, necklaces and anklets, and brides are often adorned in gold. Henna is applied to hands, arms, feet and neck for weddings, Eid and Ramadan.
