Dress in the Comoros varies from island to island, and traditional garments, jewellery and cosmetics still mark important moments in life, from everyday wear to the grandest weddings.
Women’s wraps
On Ndzwani, women traditionally wear red and white patterned garments called shiromani. On Ngazidja and Mwali, women traditionally wear colourful shawls known as leso. Many women also apply msindzano, a paste of ground sandalwood and coral, to their faces.
Men’s dress and wedding gold
Traditional male clothing includes a long white shirt called a nkandu and a bonnet known as a kofia. In the Ngazidja age system, a man who marries in an ada ceremony becomes entitled to wear a mharuma, a type of shawl across his shoulders, to show his elder status. The grand ada marriage itself is a major occasion, with two weeks of celebration, a large bridal dowry and dazzling gold jewellery.
